Danbury mayor Mark Boughton continually says he was shoved by circumstances, not ideology, into the undocumented immigration debate. Immigrant-owned businesses, which are railing against the city's partnership with ICE, say they had no choice but to confront what they see as City Hall hostility. The local NAACP, which got a hold of the anti-immigrant (and anti- other groups) emails from then- Common Council Majority Leader Pauline Basso, say they were forced by their convictions into the muck of politics.
The latest group that feels compelled into the conundrum is Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury. President Carl Tichler says the group is discussing joining the New Sanctuary Movement, a self-described "coalition...called by our faith to respond actively and publicly to the suffering of our immigrant brothers and sisters."
Tichler says the congregation is still hammering out how exactly taking the New Sanctuary pledge would change the church. He says the building will not be a literal sanctuary, its outreach would be to "people working in the system who nonetheless find themselves facing deportation and family separation," and that the group also isn't doing anything overtly political. "I think it is really a human rights issue, a moral issue," Tichler says.
For those of you unfamiliar with Unitarian doctrine, here's rules number one and two of the Unitarian Universalist Association's Principles and Purposes, and how Tichler applies them to the immigration issue:
Unitarian Universalists value "the inherent worth and dignity of every person"Congregants "affirm and promote" their notions of "justice, equity and compassion in human relations.""It doesn't matter how they got here, they have a right to work and to feed themselves and their family," says Tichler"Immigration law is not done fairly in this country. Often the judge has no discretion, and will deport people even if they are trusted community members or if they have families, just because of problems with paperwork."
If only our public servants in Washington, or the spineless Mayors, city managers had the guts of Lou Dobbs, Governor Don Carcieri and very few others to fight the illegal immigration war. As a Democrat I watch Lou every afternoon and learn about the impact upon our nations economy. California as an example is in a real chaos, concerning it's pandering to the special interest lobby. Assemblywoman Mimi Walters, a Republican from Oceanside, said illegal immigrants are costing California taxpayers an estimated $9 billion each year. The governor has ordered the release of 22.000 inmates, who are considered low-risk; low danger to the public.
Right now I'm trying to make up mind, to register as an Independent?
We are receiving pure propaganda, spin or rhetoric of from the pro-illegal immigrant zealots. Read the forums, bulletin boards and comments? You will quickly learn that predator employers are hiring illegal immigrants, because its cheaper and they don't have to pay out of their profits. Not only are illegals stealing African-Americans jobs, but all citizens. They are taking the jobs of a wide spectrum of American workers with no consequences. That is why we must enact the Federal SAVE ACT and stop this travesty of our immigration laws. Democrat lawmakers are the real culprits, because their holding back their vote in Congress. They know that the new president will sign into law a massive AMNESTY, giving the 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. Democrats who believe in enforcement must register their outrage with their representative. Find out the raw truth about illegal immigration. NUMBERSUSA! LIBERTY POST! AMERICAN PATROL!
