There are so many Ganims in Greater Bridgeport. There's the probate judge, Paul Ganim; there's the Ganim Group, which concocts "wealth acceleration solutions;" there's the Ganim Law Firm; there's the, ahem, incarcerated former mayor Joseph Ganim. One of the area's most treasured Ganims - and one of its most spring-time-fresh-smelling - is Ganim's Garden Center, which has been on King's Highway for 40 years (and was on Post Road for 30 years before that). President Lee Ganim is among the second generation of Ganims to run the nursery with daughter Merrilee acting as the store manager and son Austin in charge of the related Ganim Landscape Design. (All three are college educated in the art of horticulture.) The garden center stocks an impressive array of flowers, vegetables, seeds, tools, trees, soils and mulches. And don't think that just because it has history, it's behind the times. "There's a new interest in organic farming,"says Lee Ganim. "People want to use things like lemon juice and vinegar to get rid of their weeds instead of pesticides, and we like to think that most of our products are environmentally friendly."
