When the Beadworks Group opened their flagship store in Norwalk in 1987, we can't imagine they anticipated that in a little more than 20 years they'd have businesses in nine American cities and even open one in London. Yet, after Beadworks' rapid expansion, 139 Washington Street remains near and dear to their loyal customer base. In addition to a gigantic selection of beads that come from the far corners of the earth, Beadworks offers a variety of classes in bead jewelry design and construction. And occasionally they offer free workshops on mastering a specific technique, like a recent session on "crimping" bracelets and necklaces to finish off a design. Patrons can even book the store for parties for either adults or children. The Beadworks staff can also help with specific design problems. "A lot of times people come in with pieces that are broken and we recreate or reconstruct it," manager Lola Ochman says. And if you're stressed from looking at the condition of your 401K, a visit to the store could lower your blood pressure in at least two ways. "People love beading because it's almost meditative,"Ochman explains. "And someone who might have spent money on jewelry in the past, but can't now, can come to us and get the same look for far less."
