Finch: No Inde run

posted by

State Sen. Bill Finch will announce today, in case anyone had doubts, that he will not pull a Joe Lieberman and run as an independent if he loses the Democratic primary to his chief rival State Rep. Chris Caruso who last week told a friendly audience at a gathering of the Fairfield County chapter of Democracy for America that he was indeed considering an independent candidacy should Finch win the primary.

Finch's announcement is a way to try to keep heat on the issue five weeks before the primary. Caruso enjoys support from some supporters of Ned Lamont irritated by Lieberman’s two bites of the election ball last year. Finch was a Lieberman supporter.

It’s an interesting juggling act for Caruso – running to win a Democratic primary while keeping an eye on November. Will potential supporters question his Democratic credentials or gravitate to his uprising?

I may be politically naive. What is the BIG DEAL about any unsuccessful primary candidate running in the general election independent of party affiliation. I think that Chris Caruso should be in the planning stages of an independent run in November. Let's face it. The 'machinists" hand picked their boy Finch. All of their support and political loyalists will vote for Finch because Mario tells them to. The 'machinists" are well organized and and depend on loyal block voting. Unless there are enough registered democrats out there who have had it with the Bridgeport has been run by the "machinists" and vote outside the party mandate, Chris could lose. I don't think he is going to lose. A lot of insiders have indicated to me that they are ready for a change and registered people who don't typically get out and vote are planning on voting for Chris. That's great!! That's what I expect will happen. If it doesn't happen, then I expect Chris to be on the ballot as an independent. I want to vote for him for mayor and I'm not about to let the "machinists" rob me of that opportunity. I really don't care if he runs as a democrat or an independent...as long as he runs. How do you honestly feel?

I generally agree with envoy5 (Who are you?) The important thing is that Chris runs and is elected mayor. However, the question of Chris running as an independent is becoming increasingly moot. The Finch campaign is going nowhere fast and now stories of infighting and mistrust between DTC members and Finch campaign staff are starting to leak out and the wheels really appear to be coming off. Chris will win the Democratic primary and be the Democratic nominee in the November general election.

I know you all are probably part of the Caruso campaign and encouraged to blog to make things look good. I have to tell you that when I drive through Bridgeport I see Finch signs, bumper stickers and supporters every where. I was in a local resturaunt (not Testo's) on Friday night and downtown for the concert and everyone I spoke with was supporting Bill Finch. There seemed to be a large sentiment that Caruso was bad for the City and for taxpayers. People were talking about how negative he is and how all he talks about is corruption. One gentleman said if he has so much information about corruption, why doesn't he tell the FBI, why wait until he gets elected. Bill Finch walked the entire crowd and seemed to be getting a good response. We will see what happens soon but I would not fool yourselves, these were not party machine people I was talking with.

I Vote........ The problem with that type retail politicking is you are not ID'ing real primary voters. The Caruso campaign has personally touched 3000 real Demorcratic voters through the petition process. It is early for the "sign wars". And I never met a sign that voted. P.S. Please tell the Finch campaign to stop their political pollution with putting signs on the medians on Boston AVe.

Dear Citizen for Real Change, I guess you are with the Caruso campaign and on their blog team. I will tell you that one person specifically told me on Friday that they signed the petition and he is definitely not voting for Caruso so that would be 2999. When I asked him why he signed he said to get them away from me. I am just passing this on. You are right, they should put the signs on private property. I see this in every election especially the Lieberman vs. Lamont race. Lamont signs were on every median in the City. Also, I was curious about your code name-- if you want real change, why would you vote for someone surrounding himself with old time politicians that have been marginalized. Caruso has some of the worst people endorsing him. The list reads to me like a band of crazy people. I want professional change for the better. Not change for the crazier.

Denizen for "Real Change": You stated that "The Caruso campaign has personally touched 3000 real Democratic voters through the petition process." I'm sure that they did...but I'm sure that they are too young to vote...
